You Will Keep Us

Isaiah 26:3 New King James Version (NKJV)

You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.

Today I heard an incredible story from church history. An abbott in Northumbria was surrounded by death during one of the great plagues in the 7th century AD. All around him died, and there was none left in his worshipping community save him, and his young apprentice.

So each day they persevered. They went to the church to say the daily offices and liturgy, to keep the space sacred and set apart for Holy uses.

That young boy it is supposed went on to become the Venerable Bede, one of the most significant chroniclers of the early church in the British Isles.

He was formed and shaped by faithfulness at a dark time. We continue, and persevere, fixing our eyes on Christ on this strange good Friday.

As we focus on Him, and the darkness He suffered on this day, He Himself will keep us, see us through this hour of trial, and He alone knows what good He will bring out of it all.
